It is a liquid at ambient temperature but can rapidly evaporate into a vapor form, which is highly dangerous when inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
The effects of VX gas on the human body are severe and can be fatal. It acts by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is responsible for breaking down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in the normal functioning of the nervous system. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine, causing overstimulation of nerve cells and leading to a cascade of debilitating symptoms.
Exposure to VX gas can bring about various symptoms, including blurred vision, sweating, excessive salivation, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, convulsions, loss of consciousness, and ultimately death due to respiratory failure or heart collapse. Small amounts of VX gas can be lethal within minutes to hours, depending on the level of exposure.
Due to its extreme toxicity and potential for mass destruction, the production, stockpiling, and use of VX gas are prohibited internationally under the Chemical Weapons Convention, an arms control treaty.
