A splenocele is a medical term used to describe an abnormal enlargement or herniation of the spleen. The spleen is an organ located in the upper left side of the abdomen, underneath the rib cage. Its main functions include filtering blood, removing old or damaged blood cells, and producing and storing immune cells.
A splenocele typically develops due to various underlying conditions such as trauma, infection, inflammation, or a primary disease affecting the spleen. It is characterized by the expansion and protrusion of the spleen outside its normal position within the abdominal cavity. Common signs may include abdominal pain or discomfort, feeling of fullness or pressure in the left upper abdomen, persistent fatigue, anemia, easy bleeding or bruising, and an increased susceptibility to infections.
Diagnosis of a splenocele often involves a combination of physical examination, medical history review, imaging tests such as ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scan, and blood tests to assess the overall health and functioning of the spleen.
Treatment options for splenocele depend on the underlying cause and the severity of symptoms. In mild cases, conservative management involving pain relief medications and close monitoring may be sufficient. However, in more severe cases or when complications arise, surgical intervention to repair or remove the spleen may be considered.
