Peptidyl Dipeptidase A, also known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), is an enzyme that plays a critical role in the regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. It is a zinc metallopeptidase that is located mainly on the surface of endothelial cells lining the blood vessels and is also found in other tissues, such as the kidney and lung.
The main function of Peptidyl Dipeptidase A is to convert angiotensin I (a hormone produced by the liver) into angiotensin II (a potent vasoconstrictor). Angiotensin II constricts the blood vessels, leading to an increase in blood pressure. This enzyme also degrades and inactivates a substance called bradykinin, which is a potent vasodilator that lowers blood pressure.
In addition to its role in blood pressure regulation, Peptidyl Dipeptidase A is also involved in the metabolism of other peptides and hormones, including substance P and enkephalins. It is responsible for breaking down these substances into their inactive forms, thus maintaining their balance in the body.
Peptidyl Dipeptidase A is a target for certain medications called ACE inhibitors. These drugs inhibit the activity of the enzyme, leading to reduced levels of angiotensin II and increased levels of bradykinin, resulting in the relaxation and widening of blood vessels, and ultimately helping to lower blood pressure. ACE inhibitors are commonly prescribed to treat conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, and diabetic kidney disease.
