Epistilbite is a mineral belonging to the zeolite group, which is a group of hydrous aluminum silicate minerals. It typically crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and is composed of calcium, sodium, aluminum, silicon, oxygen, and water molecules. Its chemical formula is usually represented as (Na, Ca)8Al9Si27O72 · 28H2O.
Epistilbite is commonly found in cavities and fractures of basalts and other volcanic rocks. It forms as a result of the chemical alteration of volcanic glass or as a secondary mineral in the hydrothermal alteration of volcanic rocks. It often occurs in association with other zeolites, such as heulandite, stilbite, and natrolite.
Epistilbite is generally colorless or white, but it can also exhibit shades of yellow, orange, pink, or pale green. It has a vitreous to pearly luster and a characteristic deformed sheaf-like crystal habit, with individual crystals often radiating outward in a fan or sheaf-like shape. Its transparent to translucent crystals have a somewhat prismatic or tabular appearance.
This mineral is valued for its aesthetic qualities and is sought after by mineral collectors. It has also found some industrial uses, particularly for its ion-exchange properties. Due to its ability to selectively absorb certain ions, it is used in water treatment processes, such as removing heavy metals from contaminated water.
