It is formed by the union of nerve fibers from the anterior divisions of the fifth and sixth cervical spinal nerves (C5 and C6) and a branch from the fourth cervical spinal nerve (C4).
This plexus serves as an important nerve pathway that innervates the muscles and provides sensory information to the upper limb, specifically the shoulder joint and the skin overlying its surrounding areas. The axillary plexus gives rise to several major nerves, including the musculocutaneous nerve, median nerve, ulnar nerve, and radial nerve.
The musculocutaneous nerve supplies the muscles in the anterior part of the arm and provides sensation to the lateral surface of the forearm. The median nerve primarily innervates the muscles in the forearm and hand, as well as providing sensation to the palmar aspect of the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring fingers. The ulnar nerve is responsible for sensory function in the hand and innervates the muscles in the forearm. Lastly, the radial nerve innervates the posterior arm muscles and provides sensory function to the posterior forearm and hand.
